Assateague Island National Seashore, MD

February 17 - 20, 2006

So my buddy Alex and I had planned this 4-day weekend adventure camping trip at Assateague Island National Seashore a while back. As the time came close to the actual trip, the weather forecasted a really cold weekend... Vivi (friend), Gin (my brother), Alex and I still decided to go....

We arrived at the camp site on Friday afternoon around 4ish and did the registration at the office. I am pretty sure the woman who helped us with the registration was thinking out loud “what idiots!!! It’s going to be cold and windy this weekend and you all are camping??” Anyway, we chose the camp site that was close to the bay area. It was really really windy but it didn’t stop us from setting the tent and fire up. After we got the tent up and initial camp fire, we started chopping more wood, cooking steak (mmmm yummy) and drinking some MGD (we had a little whisky too). We were up around the camp fire, talking and drinking until about 2 AM and everybody just got tired (from chopping wood.. ) so we all went to bed..

We woke up around 9ish and started cooking the breakfast and setup the fire again.. We all just sat around the fire and chilled for a few hours. Wild horses showed up and we were petting the horses and taking pictures. They tried to rob us by taking our salad bag but they failed (I had to do some weird crazy stupid thing to scare them away).. It started snowing (more of freezing rain) and we all got wet. So we decided to go back to the tent and watched a movie (The Man). It was funny as hell.. You should watch it if you haven’t.. It’s about 4:30 PM and the sun slowly came out and disappeared again. It’s still windy but not as bad as Friday night until later. Saturday night got pretty ugly because the wind picked up again. The temperature had dropped down to 16 degree late Saturday night / Sunday morning and the wind was about 15-20 mph so it felt like 0 degree… It was coooooooold.. I am glad we all had those 0 degree proof sleeping bags so it wasn't too bad at all..

We woke up around 9ish again Sunday morning and the wind had been much calmer, but the temperature was still low (still around 16 degree but it didn’t feel as bad as with the wind). The sun had come out and it was really a clear day. We did our usual thing, cooked breakfast, ate the breakfast and just horsed around.. We brought air rifles and air guns so we were shooting targets and stuff. Oh, horses showed up again and ate our bread with the plastic bag.. We figured they were probably thirsty from the dry bread so we gave them a little MGD.. hehehehe They seem to like it though!

We had decided to cut our trip short of a night because we didn’t know if it’s going to get too cold again and we didn’t have enough logs to burn for the night so we started packing up and driving back Sunday night. We spent much of Monday cleaning up and recover from the freezing hell..

Well, this trip definitely was worth it although it was a little colder than I expected. We all had a great time and definitely would go back again. One thing we didn’t do was driving around the island and on the beach because we all were low on gas (almost empty)..  Next time when we go again, I will make sure we have enough gas so we can drive on the beach or something... Also if we go a little more south, there is a place for hiking (4 mile long trail I think) all the way down to VA which I would like to do next time when we go.

Pictures are here.
